Athena Media is a registered supplier to Capital D, RTE Television's half hour programme about Dublin which is produced by RTE News & Current Affairs. In 2006 Athena Media produced eight features for Capital D on diverse stories ranging from Open Heart - a HIV-AIDS drop in centre in Dublin city, the story of cancer survivors at St Luke's in Rathgar, to the story of emerging new bands like Director and The Chakras.
Athena Media has been re-commissioned in 2007 and again in 2008 for a new Capital D series and has produced stories ranging from the premature babies unit at The Rotunda Hospital, teenage suicide to the booming cake and dessert cafes in the city.
Our latest Capital D feature which was broadcast on 15th September 2011 is a health feature titled 'Will to Walk'.
Sometimes no matter how healthy our lifestyles are, things can go wrong and accidents can happen. When Mark Pollock was 22 and finishing his studies at Trinity College he lost his sight dramatically and suddenly.
In the ten years that followed he re-built his life, becoming a champion rower, the first blind man to trek to the South Pole and a highly successful motivational speaker.
In July last year an accidental fall in England left him paralysed and seriously injured. For the past seven months Mark has been based at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. Mark works hard every day, determined to re-gain his independence, mobility and a life outside of hospital. We spent some time with him to find out more about the innovative training programme Mark is using. This short documentary feature was aired on RTÉ One's Capital D programme on the 15th September.
